Monodisperse nanoparticles are crucial building blocks in nanotechnology. Since the properties of
nanoparticles are strongly correlated to their size and surface chemistry, it is important to develop
precise control methods in terms of size and surface chemistry. Here, we demonstrated the controlled
synthesis of silica nanoparticles using the sol-gel method. The size of silica nanoparticles could be
further increased using a seeded growth method. Also, we could modify surface of silica nanoparticles
from hydrophilic hydroxy group to hydrophobic hydrocarbon chain using a silane coupling agent. The
hydrophobic silica nanoparticles with uniform size distribution could be dispersed in organic solvent.
