K-water has completed the construction of AI water treatment plants in 43 metropolitan water treatment plants in 2024, with the world's first AI water treatment plants as a standard model. In addition, AI technology is being fully introduced to the intake water systems, such as intake fields and pressurization fields. When AI technology is fully introduced into the entire tap water supply process, operational efficiency is improved, but anxiety may exist in that the basis for Al's decision cannot be known. In addition, the AI Basic Act aimed at creating a trust base for AI has been enacted and is on the verge of being implemented from this year. As a countermeasure against this, K-water introduced XAI (eXplainable AI) technology, an explainable artificial intelligence, to AI water treatment plants on a trial basis. In this paper, we investigate how XAI technology was actually applied to the AI platform of the water treatment plant and analyze various AI algorithms applied to 13 metropolitan water treatment plants in the Han River basin to study the possibility of expanding XAI technology. In addition, alternatives in cases where it is difficult to explain the decision-making factors of AI models only with XAI technology are studied and presented. Through this, we intend to continuously introduce and develop AI technology that can be trusted by the public in the entire process of supplying tap water.
