아동기 자기통제의 종단적 변화와 개인특성의 관계 = The Relationship between Longitudinal Change of Self-control and Individual Differences during Childhood

The purpose of this study was to investigate how children’s self-control change over time and what kinds of individual differences could explain the development of self-control. We used a total of 17,554 children (boys: 8,985, girls: 8,569) from the ECLS-K (the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study-Kindergarten Cohort) dataset, and a multilevel growth modeling (MGM) was employed to analyze data. Results showed that self-control non-linearly increased from kindergarten to 5th grade and when internalizing and externalizing problem behavior were controlled as time-varying covariates, the growth rate of self-control became more salient. Among the individual differences affecting self-control, gender, race, being raised by two biological parents were found to be statistically significant factors. Approach to learning was found to have a relatively greater and positive impact on self-control. This study contributed to literature in that it examined the developmental trajectories of self-control from kindergarten to elementary school, accounting for the problem behaviors using a large-scale assessment dataset.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구의 목적은 아동기에 형성되어 일생에 걸쳐 지속적으로 영향을 미친다고 알려진 자기통제가 시간에 따라 어떻게 변화하며, 다양한 개인특성들이 자기통제의 형성과 발달을 어떻게 예측하는지를 알아보기 위한 것이다. 연구대상은 미국의 아동종단연구(Early Childhood Longitudinal Study-Kindergarten Cohort: ECLS-K)에서 수집된 자료의 학생들로, 유치원부터 초등학교 5학년까지의 아동 17,554명(남: 8,985명, 여: 8,569명)이 조사되었다. 분석을 위해서 다층성장모형(Multilevel Growth Modeling: MGM)을 적용하였으며, 연구결과 아동기의 자기통제는 비선형모형을 따라 성장하였고, 시간에 따라 변하는 내재화·외현화문제행동의 영향력을 통제했을 때 자기통제의 변화가 좀 더 두드러지게 나타났다. 개인특성 요인 중 성별과 인종, 친부모양육 여부는 자기통제의 변화를 유의하게 예측하였으며, 특히 학습접근은 자기통제의 변화에 가장 큰 예측력을 보였다. 본 연구는 자기통제와 밀접한 관련이 있는 문제행동의 변화를 통제하고, 대규모 자료를 사용하여 아동기 전반에 걸친 자기통제의 변화와 영향요인을 알아보았다는 점에서 의의를 지닌다.
