In this paper I discuss two topics, which seem a bit distant from each other, but can be studied together in the name of language classification. In the first section, I discuss the two models of the representation of the genealogical relationship in language families: the family-tree model and the wave model. Then, in the second section, I discuss the relationship between typological and genealogical classification, addressing the strong points and weak points in those methodes.
