Music therapy has been actively implemented in school setting for students with special needs. Musical activities can assist students to gain functioning skills in various developmental domains by structuring the musical tasks and application. The purpose of this paper was to examine historical overview of the music therapy in school setting and special education in accordance with educational program and related legislative actions. The paper also examined the effect Individualized Education Plan (IEP) had on music therapy and how it facilitated music therapy or adapted music education to be implemented in educational plans for each students with various needs. The paper concluded with the suggestion that active educational and therapeutic use of music should be encouraged in school setting since music can facilitate academic learning, socialization, communication, and behavioral skills of the students.
