A study on a Typological System According to the Structure of Place Identity

(Background and Purpose) Users who experience a contemporary city are demanding to experience a space with new contents based on spontaneous needs that is different from the classification and characters of ready-made spaces so far. A place reinforces its identity by creating various contents in the place including human psychological, mental, and emotional parts from a city image and an atmosphere, identity of a place, personality and differentiation of a place, and various experiences that citizens unconsciously feel in their daily life. From the point of view, this study is a basic study for the reconstruction of human-oriented place identity, and its purpose is to examine the types and the system of place identity based on the formation structure and elements of place identity. (Method) Although a city has achieved quantitative growth according to the diverse needs and activities of people, the reality is that its place identity is not valued due to universality, uniformity, and similarity. Therefore, as a basic study for the reconstruction of human-oriented identity, it conducted a theoretical study based on literature review and then a qualitative study to analyze it. It attempts to understand the concept of a place through the concept of space and place, and the process of place-making of space, and to identify the relationship and structure of sense of place and placeness that constitute place identity. It tries to derive types of place identity and a system that can change and develop in various ways by identifying the formation structure, elements, and characters of place identity. (Results) It examined the types of place identity through its formation structure and elements in a contemporary city, and it derived a typological system of place identity with various combinations and configurations such as physical property of placeness, identity of a place itself, identity of spatial contact and sense of place centered on human experience, human identity with a place, and identity of human contact that appears through an interaction such as human feelings, emotions, attitudes, and behaviors about a place according to the configuration of place identity. (Conclusions) This study identified the type of place identity through its formation structure and elements, and derived the typological system by dividing them into the identity of place itself and the human identity of the place with various elements such as spatial classification, formation structure, experience process, experience state, difference in degree, and sensory results. It is expected that the typological system of place identity, such as identity of spatial contact, human identity with a place, and identity of human contact, is extended in a various way due to the typological system, temporality, reflection of the times, and variable factors.
