This study examines the development and spiritual significance of tea culture in mid‑Joseon (16th century), focusing on tea poems (茶詩) found in the collected writings of Confucian scholars from the Honam region. While previous research on Korean tea culture has largely centered on Buddhist practices of the Goryeo period or the practical learning (silhak) of the late Joseon era, this thesis seeks to shed new light on the tea culture of mid‑Joseon scholars prior to the Imjin War, clarifying its intellectual and everyday characteristics.
Through an analysis of the works of prominent Honam scholars—Seokcheon Im Eok‑ryeong (林億齡), Okbong Baek Gwang‑hun (白光勳), Jebong Go Gyeong‑myeong (高敬命), and Baekho Im Je (林悌)—this study demonstrates that tea functioned not merely as a favored beverage but as a medium of social exchange, self‑cultivation, and spiritual communion. In the midst of political upheaval and the aftermath of literati purges, these scholars often withdrew into seclusion or remained in rural communities, cultivating a distinctive poetic style that blended Daoist and Zen aesthetics through a life of tea enjoyed in pavilions and natural settings.
Their tea poems reflect this lived world and inner spirit, embodying the ethos of a “scholarly tea way” (士人茶道) in which Confucian, Buddhist, and Daoist thought harmonized. By reconstructing the realities of mid‑Joseon tea culture, this study highlights its enduring significance and suggests pathways for recovering the inner values and refined sensibilities that contemporary tea culture might aspire to.
