Paragraph의 문법적 분석 = A Grammatical Analysis on Paragraph in Written English

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This thesis aimed at analyzing the structure of paragraph in written English of scientific writing.
First of all, it was studied whether a paragraph can be analysed and described in grammatical view. Paragraph has the subdividing feature in the form and meaning such as in the morpheme, word, and sentence. And paragraph was analysed into sub-units. So it is possible that paragraph can be analysed on grammatical view. The result is as follows.
First, the sentence becomes the constituent in paragraph, and the sentences are
classified into three types in the view of sentence structure.
Second, the paragraph, which is commonly constituted with more than two sentences, is classified into four types according to the relative position of primary sentence
(sentence on which main ideal is concreted, and abbreviated with Ps) and secondary one(sentence on which specific idea is concreted, and abbreviated with Ss). The types are (1) Ps+Ss(+Ss+...Ss)type, (2) Ss(+Ss+...Ss)+Ps+Ss(+Ss+...Ss)type, (3) Ss(+Ss+...+Ss)+Ps type, and (4) Ss(+Ss+...+Ss)+Ss type.
Third, the paragraph is analyzed by means of the IC analysis and the endocentric & exocentric construction. In the view of the latter it is desirable that the paragraph construction is classified into subordinated construction and coordinated one.
Fourth, the structural relationship between sentences which are connected is expressed through the sentence relaters, especially syntactic devices.
Finally, paragraph is one thought unit which is connected with ideas. Its structure is the thing which the thought structure is concreted through language. Therefore, in the dimension of the study on the mind structure (or the thought process), or on the relationship between the mind structure and language structure, it is possible that the transformational generative or psycho-linguistic approach can be done and the result is anticipated.
