This study explores the tendency of “Non-Defined Identity” emerging across contemporary culture and arts since the mid-2010s. Following the branding era of the late 1980s, individual identity evolved into strategic “Identity Capital.” As social media and platform economies matured, creators faced market demands to establish clear, consistent, and differentiated selves. This competitive structure for creative survival triggered a fundamental awakening, manifesting as practices that intentionally deconstruct existing identity grammars.
The primary objectives of this research are to analyze and conceptualize non-defined patterns, experimentally explore their intrinsic value through artwork production based on precedent cases, and examine new directions in creator identity discourse after postmodernism. To achieve this, the study employed an interdisciplinary approach integrating literature review, case analysis, and practice-based research.
The research produced three main results. First, influential cases in creative fields were analyzed and classified into five types: Subject Perception, Category Expansion, Concept Projection, Style Pioneering, and Process Practice. Second, the artwork GIMYE S/S 2025 SHOW was produced by integrating and applying these types based on David Bohm's concept of Wholeness. This work was presented twenty-three times in August 2024 at an art museum in Seoul as a fusion of performance, exhibition, and showroom. Third, audience analysis confirmed diverse layers of interpretation and extensive re-contextualization of the work.
Consequently, this study systematizes scattered individual practices into a unified concept and proposes Wholeness as a new theoretical foundation.
It confirms that non-defined identity represents a collective response to reclaim inherent uniqueness beyond market-driven fragmentation. As digital media reconfigures life and coexistence with artificial intelligence becomes essential, continued research is necessary to expand this discourse.
