The purpose of this study is to examine time-series changes in torso measurements and somatotype characteristics among school-age girls, and to provide foundational data for improving clothing construction and sizing systems. Data for girls aged 7–13 from the 6th (2011, n=619) and 8th (2023, n=362) Size Korea surveys were analyzed using 49 three-dimensional body measurements with SPSS 27.0.
First, a t-test comparing torso measurements across the two survey years showed accelerated vertical growth in 2023, with significant increases in key height items compared to 2011. Shoulder slope angles decreased markedly across all ages, indicating a shift toward a square-shouldered morphology.
Second, horizontal, depth, and girth items also increased overall, and a noticeable rise in waist and abdominal circumferences suggested a flatter torso silhouette and obesity-related characteristics among late school-age girls.
Third, factor analysis extracted four major components—horizontal torso size, vertical torso size, torso curvature and shape, and shoulder configuration.
Cluster torso,” analysis subjects into four somatotype groups: “Tall and thick “Short and petite,” “Average vertical/horizontal size,” and “Slim and voluminous torso.” A comparison of the two survey periods revealed a polarization trend, with both the “Tall and thick torso” and “Slim and voluminous torso” groups increasing in proportion, while the average somatotype decreased. These results indicate that a single average-based sizing system is insufficient to reflect the contemporary body characteristics of school-age girls and point to the need for dual- or multi-fit sizing structures within height groups.
This study provides empirical evidence for developing updated pattern construction methods and children’s wear sizing systems that more accurately reflect current torso characteristics of school-age girls.
