This study focuses on the penetrability when driving a steel pile with a large diameter through a thick gravel layer by a oil pressure hammer To this end, a field testing was performed in a construction site and its results were compared with those of the existing dynamic analysis. Analyzed by existing method, it turned out to be impossible to drive a pile through the thick gravel layer. On the other hand, in the testing site, the pile was driven successfully and located at the top of a weathered rock layer.
Therefore, based on the field testing results, penetrability was analysed in terms of the variation of input parameters for the existing dynamic analysis. In this study, proper input parameters of dynamic analysis are suggested for similar geological conditions to this construction site so that error can be avoided in designing a construction method in future.
