한국인의 국제정치적 행위의 원형을 찾아서

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study is designed to explain how Korean foreign behaviors have been formulated in the course of its history. When the Koreans opened its doors to the outside world in the latter part of the nineteenth century, the Westerners as well as Korea's neighbors, China and Japan, regarded Korean attitude to foreigners as abnormal. It is generally believed that the Koreans had been overwhelmingly influenced by Neo-Confucianism, whose world outlook was non-egalitarian, hierarchical, and above all deferential vis-a-vis China. This article will show how the characteristics of Korean foreign behavior had been formed as early as Korean kingdoms began to contact with China even before Confucianism was not introduced to the peninsula, through such ideas as contact/conflict, civilization versus barbarity and the tributary relationship, all of which appeared in historical records in Korea and China.
