This thesis is a study to identify the aspect and characteristic of the primordial self embodied in D.H.Lawrence's literature, compare it with those of Zen and find out the commonness between both of them.
The aim of this thesis is to establish a new eastern interpretation of Lawrence's literature by identifying how the aspect and thought of Zen appear in Lawrence's The Plumed Serpent and "Last Poems".
The wisdom of Lawrence's literature turns out to be identical with that of the oriental Zen. For clear understanding of the mysticism in Lawrence's literature, the knowledge or researching way of archetypal analysis psychology and phenomenology philosophy is used or applied. The result of such study is that the thought of primordial self embodied in Lawrence's literature is identical with the oriental thought of Void, Middle Way, Not-Two, Circle, Cosmic Mind, and with the oriental idea of return to or manifestation of Cosmic Energy or Soul which belong to Zen (or Zen-Buddhism).
What Lawrence calls 'Blood-consciousness' is comic unconsciousness buried in man's self or body. The reality in man's blood-consciousness or unconsciousness means, to Lawrence, the cosmic one which is deeply rooted in man's consciousness. Such consciousness of Lawrence's is identical with the pure, original, or cosmic consciousness which oriental Zen-masters have given great emphasis to. The aspects, principle and truth which Lawrence try to embody in his literature are the same as those that Oriental Zen-masters hope to realize. The consciousness world described in the image or symbol of Circle and Indian animistic dance in The Plumed Serpent appear also in Zen. The cosmic characteristic of death consciousness described in "Last Poem" appears also in Zen.
