The purpose of this studt was three-fold: (1) to disclose the relationship of children’s clothing sex-role with mother’s sex-role attitudes and child-rearing sex-role attitudes, (2) to examine the relationship of clothing sex-roe with clothing convinience and clothing style preference, (3) to disclose the levels of clothing behavior according to such demographic variables as children’s sex, grade, having the opposite sex’s brothers, and mother’s age.
Questionaires for sex-role attitudes and child-rearing sex-role attitudes were chosen from ones which were used in previous study. Clothing sex-role and convinience questionaires were developed for this study. Items were selected based on Cronbach’s Alpha Reliability Coefficient. Clothing style preference was measured by 4 pictures of T-shirts.
Samples were 347 boys and girls (4th, 5th, 6th grade) of three elementary schools in Seoul, Korea. The data were analyzed by correlation coefficient, t-test, ANOVA, and Duncan’s multiple range tests.
The followings were the results of the study.
1. There were positive correlation between children’s clothing sex-role and mother’s sex-role attitudes.
2. Mother’s child-rearing sex-role attitudes had no significant relation with children’s clothing sex-role in girl’s dress scale while having a positive relation in boy’s dress scale.
3. Boys who had high clothing convinience scores tended to have high traditional attitudes in clothing sex0role, and girls with high clothing convinience scores tended to have high liberal attitudes in clothing sex-role.
4. When they had high traditional attitudes in clothing sex-role, boys preferred masculine style and girls preferred feminine style in clothing pictures.
5. There were significant difference in clothing sex-role and clothing style preference according to the sex. Girls had higher liberal attitudes in clothing sex-role than boys had.
6. There were no significant difference in clothing sex-role and clothing convinience according to the grade.
7. There were significant difference in clothing sex-role according to having the opposite sex’s brothers.
8. There were significant difference in clothing sex-role according to mother’s age.
