The purpose of this study is to find out what effects the group counseling through the program for overcoming learned helplessness has on establishing positive self-concept and improving achievement of the second high school students who have learned helplessness.
In order to accomplish such purpose of study, hypotheses are formed as follows :
1. There may be a little difference between the group which has gotten training for overcoming learned helplessness and the group which has not gotten in the pre and post test for overcoming learned helplessness.
2. There may be a little difference between two groups in the pre and post test for learning self-concept.
3. There may be a little difference between them in learning achievement.
In order to solve hypothesis mentioned above, 16 first grade students, who are at W high school in Wanju-gun, Jeollabuk-do were involved in the study. 8 students who wants the group counseling were involved in the program for overcoming learned helplessness once or twice a week and the rest of the students were in the controlled group. The counseling was carried out 13 times and every counseling took 60 minutes.
While the program was carried out in the test group, any other method was not applied to the controlled group to find out a little difference between the pre and the post test.
The program for overcoming learned helplessness was reconstructed for high school students. Referred several programs such as Harvey Jackins' Re-evaluation counseling(l965), Cha Myung-ho's Program for promotion of personal relation, Yoon Jeom Ryoung's Program for self-concept and sense of value establishment in juvenile, and Kim Nam Ok's Method Training Program for encouraging study drive and time management, etc.
To prove this program to be a method for improving achievement, establishing appropriate self -concept and overcoming helplessness, the test of helplessness in learning, t proof was utilized with the data from the learning self-concept test, the test of helplessness in learning, and the pre and post test of learning achievement.
The important results of this study are as follows :
1. The group counseling through the program for overcoming learned helplessness is effective on decreasing learned helplessness and establishing positive self-concept.
2. As the group counseling through the program for overcoming learned helplessness has little difference in learning achievement, continuous counseling and positive encouragement for steady learning are required.
