산업유산과 지역발전에 대한 문화지리학적 연구 - 태백시 철암지역을 사례로 - = Cultural Geographical Study of Industrial Heritage and Regional Development - A Case of Cheolam region, Taebaek -

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

There are increasing academic and social concern on heritage and heritage tourism in Korea. Cultural geographers in the western world have been working on heritage, national identity and heritage tourism for the last two decades. According to recent works on heritage we need to consider the concept of cultural and industrial heritage as a dynamic one beyond the binary opposition of tradition(pre-modern)and modern. In other words culture is constantly reconstructed based on contemporary social needs. This study examines the argument between an architect group and Taeback city on the authenticity of industrial heritage and its aesthetic value referring to the case of Cheolam region. And the author also explore how the regional development model of industrial heritage tourism can be an alternative to the conventional regional development strategy.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

최근 우리나라에서도 유산(heritage)와 유산관광에 대한 학문적, 사회적 관심이 꾸준히 높아지고 있다. 서구의 문화지리학자들은 지난 20년간 유산과 민족정체성, 유산관광 등의 주제에 대해 지속적으로 관심을 기울여 왔다. 특히 최근의 근대문화유산이나 산업유산에 대한 사회적 관심 및 연구에 따르면, 문화유산 개념을 ‘전통-현대’라는 이분법적 도식에서 벗어나 보다 역동적이고 동태적인 개념으로 파악할 필요가 있다. 즉, 문화유산이 단지 완성된 형태로 ‘전해 내려온’ 것이 아니라, 현재의 사회적 필요에 의해서 끊임없이 재구성된다는 것이다. 본 연구에서는 태백시 철암지역의 사례를 통해 산업유산경관의 진정성(authenticity)과 심미적 가치에 대해 지역에서 활동했던 건축가집단과 태백시 및 일부주민들 간의 관점의 차이를 검토한다. 나아가 건축가 집단이 제시했던 산업유산보존을 통한 지역발전 전략이 기존의 통상적인 지역발전 및 관광개발전략에 대한 대안이 될 수 있는가를 탐구한다.
