솔바스의 영화 타이틀 디자인에 관한 연구 = (A) study on film title design by Saul Bass

국문 초록 (Abstract)

영화 타이틀 디자인사에서 직접적이고 사실적인 묘사없이 분절되고 단절된 그래픽들의 움직임만으로 영화를 상징해 낸 <황금팔을 가진 사나이(The Man With the Golden Arm)> 에서의 솔 바스(Saul Bass, 1920∼1996)의 디자인을 가리켜 진정한 프로로서의 타이틀 디자인이 시작되었고 평가한다. 이러한 솔 바스의 혁신적인 디자인은 그를 타이틀 디자인에서의 혁명가 혹은 개척자로 칭하게 만들었다.
타이틀 디자인의 독자적인 전문 영역을 확보하고 실험적인 발전을 거듭한 솔 바스의 영화 타이틀 디자인을 연구하는 것은 영화와 타이틀 디자인과의 관계를 정리하여 새롭게 자리매김할 수 있는 계기를 제공하고 더욱 발전시키려는 현상황의 필연적 요구에서 비롯되었고 바람직한 미래의 타이틀 디자인의 방향을 제시하여 그 영역을 확장하고자 하는 것이다.
본 연구에서는 솔 바스의 영화 타이틀 디자인이 성립하게 된 근거를 시대적 및 이론적 고찰을 통하여 살펴 보았으며, 솔 바스의 영화 타이틀 디자인 이외의 다양한 조형활동들을 정리해 봄으로써 그의 근본적인 조형의식에 근접하고자 하였다. 한편, 솔 바스의 영화 타이틀 디자인 개념을 정의하는 것은 영화 타이틀 디자인의 실체를 조명해 보는 것이며, 이것의 실례로써 솔 바스의 타이틀 디자인을 상징성, 단순성, 유머, 구조성, 연결성, 대조성 등의 여섯 가지로 파악하여 그 특징을 분석하였다.
결과적으로 볼 때, 스크린 매체의 그래픽으로서 그 중추적 기능을 발휘하는 오늘날의 영화 타이틀 디자인은 솔 바스의 확장된 사고와 실험적 시도 그리고 그의 작품들에 의해 이루어진 것이다. 영화 타이틀 디자인사에서 그가 갖는 의의는 타이틀 디자인의 표현 방법 및 범위를 확대시키고 심화시켜서 독립적인 전문영역으로서 그 위치를 재정립 하였다는 데 가치를 가지며 기술의 발달에 따른 메카니즘적 영역 확장과 더불어 지각 영역의 확장은 물론 더욱 더 나아가 의식의 확장까지 이끌었다는 것이다. 따라서 영화 타이틀 디자인사에서 그의 역할은 빼놓을 수 없는 가치를 가지고 있음을 확인하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

"The Man with the Golden Arm" by Saul Bass' (1920 ∼1996) was created without direct or realistic approach. By using movements of simplified graphic images, Saul Bass truly redefined the meaning of Title Design in film. Saul Bass' revolutional perceptive images and artistically polished designs made him the forefront of Title design in Motion Picture.
The relationship between Film and Title Design was the main purpose behind this research on Saul Bass. Saul Bass reorganized the new aspects of Title Design based on his creative mind and fresh approach. And his professional independent as a Title Designer influenced majority of his followers, most of then were movie-makers and graphic designers. How to preserve and guide the future of Title Design as an independent medium is the point of this research. This research is mainly focused on Saul Bass' life-long study of Film Title Design and his various artistic approaches to reexamine the basic elements of his artistic senses. Through this research, the notion of Saul Bass' Film Title Design is defined and an essence of his works is discovered. For instance, Saul Bass' Film Title Design is analysed and distinguished as six characteristic aspects; symbolism, simplicity, humour, construction, connection and contrast.
Saul Bass known as an influential Title Designer who redefined appearance of graphic design as a part of moving images, is the most principal pioneer in the history of Film Title Design. He reinvented the definition of Film Title Design and presented endless creative visual possibilities to both graphic design and film world. His creative mind and influential approach is the core force of his creations.
