번역 서사의 정치성과 탈정치성 -『조양보』 연재소설, 「비스마룩구清話」를 중심으로 = Politics and De-politics of Translated narrative - focused on 「비스마룩구清話(Bismarck’s Table-Talk)」, the serial novel of 『朝陽報(JoYangBo)』

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this article is to trace distribution and change of German hero, Bismarck’s Korean biography which is a double-translation and reveal division aspect of politics in it, and then make crack partially in the view of studies in 1900s’ translation. Main analysis object is 「비스마룩구淸話(Bismarck’s Table-Talk)」(1906), the serial novel of 『朝陽報(JoYangBo)』. Even though early translation, problem of hero and unique route of acceptance, 「비스마룩구淸話」 has not focused all the while. So in this article, it focuses a discussion on the phased comparison between 「비스마룩구淸話」 and its original script, English and Japanese translation.
Charles Lowe who is author of Bismarck’s Table-Talk(1895) in English version, tried to describe Bismarck as an ordinary person who had an everyday conversation with his family, friends, or neighbors. While Murakami Shunzo who is author of Japanese version 『ビスマ−ク公清話』(1898), described Bismarck as hero again so his politics was maximized. On the other hand, in 「비스마룩구淸話」 of 『朝陽報』, the politics of Japanese version was excluded. 『朝陽報』 did not translate introduction let alone writer’s name, Murakami, and focused his efforts on cancelling out emphasis point in original script. As a result, 「비스마룩구淸話」 became kind of wisdom story and provided both of fun and lesson, so Bismarck was described as a wise man in Korean version.
「비스마룩구淸話」 shows that the scripts considered as the most politic text was introduced different aspect as antipolitics. That’s the difference between Korean version and other biography of Bismarck of the same age. Like 「비스마룩구淸話」, de-political translations were not excluded in public opinion at that time. Nevertheless, one of the major reasons that it seems to be excluded is researchers’ awareness of the times stereotypes. The studies in translation experience new rising now. But without critical consciousness about the past premise, the studies are likely to settle for the write material principle which is subjected to the view of main history of literature even though new material will be found. Significance and duty of the studies in translation is to provide the power can aware the times newly.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글의 목표는 重譯되어 한국에 이른 독일 영웅 비스마르크 전기의 유통과 변이를 추적하여 그 정치성의 분절 양상을 밝히고, 이를 통해 1900년대를 대하는 번역 연구의 시각에 일정 부분 균열을 일으키는 데 있다. 주 분석 대상은 『조양보』 연재소설, 「비스마룩구淸話」(1906)다. 「비스마룩구淸話」는 이른 번역 시기와 대상 인물의 문제성, 그리고 수용 경로의 독특함에도 불구하고 그동안 연구사의 조명을 받지 못했다. 이에 본고에서는 「비스마룩구淸話」의 저본이 되는 영문/일문 텍스트와의 단계적 비교를 집중적으로 수행하였다.
영문판 저자 찰스 로우는 Bismarck’s Table-Talk를 통해 의외의 비스마르크, 즉 일상적 교제를 풍성하게 나누는 한 인간으로서의 그를 형상화 하고자 했다. 하지만 일역자 무라카미 슌조는 『ビスマ−ク公清話』에서 로우의 비스마르크를 ‘영웅의 像’으로 되돌렸고, 이 과정에서 비스마르크의 정치성은 극대화 되었다. 한편 『조양보』의 「비스마룩구淸話」는 일문 저본의 정치성을 탈각시킨다. 한국어 번역자는 무라카미의 이름은 커녕 사명감 가득한 自序를 조금도 옮기지 않았으며 저본의 강조 지점들을 오히려 상쇄시키는 데 주력했다. 결과적으로 「비스마룩구淸話」 일종의 ‘지혜담’으로 둔갑하여 재미와 교훈을 함께 제공했으며, 이 과정에서 비스마르크는 ‘지혜자’ 다운 품격을 갖춘 모습으로 주조되었다.
「비스마룩구淸話」의 번역은 가장 정치적 텍스트 부류라고 판단해 온 것들이 정치성에서 이탈하여 다른 양상으로 소비되는 모습을 보여준다. 이는 동시대의 다른 비스마르크 전기들과도 차별화 되는 지점이다. 시야를 넓혀 보면 「비스마룩구淸話」와 같이 탈정치화 된 번역물은 당대 공론장에서 예외적 존재가 아니었다. 그럼에도 그것이 예외로 보이는 이유는 연구자들의 고정된 시대 인식에서 기인하는 바 크다. 번역 연구는 새로운 융성기를 맞이하고 있다. 그러나 시대를 보는 기왕의 전제들에 대한 비판 의식 없이는, 새로운 자료를 발굴하더라도 주류 문학사적 관점에 복속하는 소재주의에 머물기 십상이다. 번역 연구의 의의이자 의무는 오히려 시대를 새롭게 읽어낼 수 있는 동력을 제공하는 데 있다.
