This paper is intended to determine the effects of modern rhythmic Gymnastics(MRG) when it is applied to mass games (MG) especially performed with boys and girls mixed.
The survey is based on the mass game, performed in the last Kyungpuk Provincial Athletic Games, in which the writer made the first attempt to apply RGM to a mixed MG.
The results may be summarized as follows:
1. In application of MRG to MG planning, it is necessary that we should have a sound knowledge on the essential qualities of MRG: flexibility, whole-boby mobility, aesthetic expressionism, and natural rhythmicality.
2. MRG can be generally divided into two kinds: the one with hand-apparatus, and free exercise. If we introduce the former into MG, the composition should take into consideration the characteristics of the instruments to be used.
3. There are nine movements in MRG: swing movement, jump movement, turn movement, circular movement, wave movement, balance movement, toss-and-catch, roll, and bounce. But the choice among them should depend on the main theme and composing members in MG.
4. In case of mixed MG, its patterns should be programmed on the basis of sexual peculiarities so as to attain the harmonizing effects between both sexualities.
5. In school education, MG should play an educational role in physical, mental, social aspects of learning.
6. The female students showed more understanding on MRG than the male ones, and in both cases it was mainly through mass media that they got thier knowledge on MRG.
The movements that marked the highest difficulty for male and female are balancing and jumping respectively, while the lowest are wave movement for male, and swing movement for female.
The movements with hand-apparatus showed more difficulty than free exercise, but in the former case more amount of mobility was obtained and the connected movements had flexibility.
7. In mixed MG, both sexes showed mutually more active participation, and their parents also showed favorable responses to mixed MG.
8. More than four-fifths of the respondents demanded the necessity for MG as a part of in-school activities. They maintain that it help to establish cooperative spirit among students and close intimacy with their teachers. Besides it keeps them being concerned more than ever with their own school.
In view of the results obtained, MRG should be put more emphasis on not only for international games but also for national health and other additional advantages it gives us. So the facts that MRG training is desirable especially for male students should not be overlooked. Since MRG is more effective for whole-body exercises and physical expressionism, it should be fully utilized as MG subjects.
