세대연구의 경향과 쟁점

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 한국에서 세대연구의 현황을 검토하고, 공통적으로 발견되는 문제점을 지적하는 데 목적이 있다. 정치·사회적으로 세대현상이 두드러지면서 경험연구도 크게 늘어나는 추세이지만, 많은 연구에서 발견되는 오류로 인해 생산적인 논의가 이뤄지지 않고 있다. 첫째, 세대가 정확히 무엇을 지칭하는지 혼란스럽고, 둘째, 특정 시점에 고정된 분석으로 인해 세대 정체성의 변화와 지속을 보지 못하고 있으며, 셋째, 정치적 세대와 사회문화적 세대의 차이점이 간과되어 왔고, 마지막으로 엘리트 수준과 대중 수준을 구별하지 않음으로 인해 세대현상의 다이내미즘을 보지 못하고 있다. 이런 주요 쟁점에 대해 진지하게 고려해야만 생산적이고 누적적인 경험연구가 이뤄질 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The paper sheds some light on the pitfalls of existing studies on the political generation. While the subject of generation draws increasing attention from scholars, most of extant works show both theoretical and methodological problems. 1) missspecified use of the concept of generation, 2) static approaches that hinder to distinguish between life-cycle and generational components, 3) failure to see the distinctive aspects of political and socio-cultural generation, 4) overlooking the role of elites in forming generational identity. Taking the issues seriously into consideration will facilitate more productive and cumulative research on the generation.
