The purpose of this study is to qualitatively analyze the meaning of picture book-linked play experiences for five-year-old children as part of the kindergarten to primary school transition education. By examining the transition process from the perspective of young children, the study aims to understand the significance of picture book-linked play experiences led by the children themselves.
1. What is the meaning of picture book-linked play experiences for the kindergarten-to-primary school transition education?
To this end, the researcher observed and supported picture book-linked play during free play time and daily activities in the “Sky Class,” a class of five-year-old children, from November 4 to December 27, 2024, after they read a total of eight picture books selected for supporting the kindergarten-to-primary school transition. The picture books for the kindergarten-to-primary school transition, as defined by the researcher, are those that help children indirectly experience elementary school life and develop a positive perception of themselves as future elementary school students. These books aim to support a smooth transition to elementary school and promote the healthy growth and development of young children. The flow of the play was carried out in the following stages: First, the children predicted the story by exploring the cover of the transition-themed picture book. Then, they listened to the teacher reading the book during the “Appreciating the Picture Book” stage. Afterward, they shared their ideas for play activities inspired by the book in the “Sharing Play Ideas” stage. These ideas were then freely expressed during playtime or throughout the kindergarten day in the “Engaging in Play” stage. Finally, in the “Sharing Play Experiences” stage, the children presented or shared their play experiences with their peers. In the course of this study, photos, videos, and children's work that captured their play experiences related to the kindergarten-to-primary school transition were collected. In addition, to understand the flow and meaning of the play, play transcripts, observation records, and materials summarizing the play process were gathered. linked on this data, the meanings of the picture book-linked play experiences related to the kindergarten-to-primary school transition were categorized and analyzed. The conclusions drawn from this study are as follows.
First, through picture book-linked play activities related to the kindergarten-to-primary school transition, children developed curiosity about the differences between kindergarten and elementary school, actively explored them, and formed a positive perception of elementary school.
Second, through picture book-linked play activities related to the kindergarten-to-primary school transition, children discovered similarities between kindergarten and elementary school and developed a sense of familiarity with elementary school.
Third, through picture book-linked play activities related to the kindergarten-to-primary school transition, children came to understand the transition from kindergarten to elementary school within the context of their own lives and developed a positive perception of themselves growing into elementary school students.
Fourth, through picture book-linked play activities related to the kindergarten-to-primary school transition, children independently discovered the skills needed to adapt to elementary school. They created and enjoyed play that supported the development of these skills, demonstrating a sense of competence and accomplishment in the process.
Fifth, through picture book-linked play activities related to the kindergarten-to-primary school transition, children recognized the need for learning during the process of exploring elementary school. They expressed their newly acquired knowledge through play, demonstrating confidence about their academic life after entering elementary school.
Sixth, through picture book-linked play activities related to the kindergarten-to-primary school transition, children were able to recognize and articulate their anxieties about entering elementary school. They actively worked through these concerns and, in the process of preparing for school entry, developed a sense of anticipation and excitement.
This study on the meaning of picture book-linked play experiences for the kindergarten-to-primary school transition recognizes young children as active agents who construct their own experiences. By exploring the transition process within the context of children's lives, the study holds significance in supporting their smooth adjustment to elementary school and promoting their continuous growth and development. Furthermore, if research on picture book-linked play experiences for the kindergarten-to-primary school transition continues in educational settings, it is expected that more meaningful and supportive transition experiences can be provided for young children.
