미국 체육 명칭의 역사적 고찰과 철학적 성찰 = Historical Research and Philosophical Reflection on Name of Physical Education in USA

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study was to review historical change of title on the name of physical education in USA and to reflect critically on it's name. Through the analyses on previous studies and various kinds of information sources, key content were extracted. Earlier migrates in the continental United States carried out mainly European style gymnastics. American were interested in New physical education. Sports have emerged as one of the programs of physical education. Physical education name in USA has been gradually changed according to value oriented paradigm and excessive survivalism(progressive, positivism, neo-liberalism). Especially the gap between academic community and physical education fields was an inevitable problem. Recently, in the United States, American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance(AAPERD) developed itself focusing on the practical base rather than the academic, delivering their original foci on academic disciplinary movements to American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education(Gim, 2012). It seems so obvious that diversity names on physical education were sought in value oriented hygienic, education, sport, and exercise.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구의 목적은 미국 체육 명칭의 역사적 고찰과 철학적 성찰을 통하여 우리나라 체육 명칭의 정립에 대한 교훈과 시사점을 얻는 것이다. 이를 위하여 첫째로 미국 체육 명칭의 생성과 변화를 중심으로 근대이후부터 최근까지의 명칭에 대하여 알아보았다. 둘째로 미국 체육 명칭의 정체성에 관한 철학적 성찰을 하였다. 결과는 다음과 같다. 초기에 유럽식 체조를 도입하여 행하였고 신체육이 등장하여 신체육의 목표를 위한 프로그램의 하나로서 스포츠라는 명칭을 사용하게 되었다. 이후에 체육의 명칭 역시 기존의 체육에서 스포츠에로 변화가 일어났다. 1980년대 이후 사회변화와 시대적 요청에 의해서 다양한 명칭이 등장했다. 요약하면, 체육이란 용어는 신체활동과 체조에서 시작하여 신체문화, 신체훈련 등의 의학, 위생, 보건 분야에서 사용되었다. 하지만 1960년대 체육의 학문화 운동이후 체육이 대학 내에 존재할 수 있는 정당성을 얻기 위해서 교육 분야로의 진출을 모색하게 되었다. 그 결과 체육의 정체성에 대한 관심이 집중되어 학문 명칭에 대한 관심도 높아졌다. 정체성 논쟁과 더불어 새로운 학문 명칭에 대한 수요가 급증하여 체육학, 스포츠학, 운동학 관련 다양한 명칭들이 등장하였다. 결과적으로 체육의 명칭은 고정 불변하지 않으면 역사적 맥락과 사회의 필요성에 의하여 생성하고 변화해 왔음을 알 수 있다. 체육에 관한 명칭 변화에서 중요한 것은 학문적 정체성을 상실하지 않는 것이다.
