The purpose of this thesis is to study three aspects of symbols in O'Neill's Long Day's Jouney into Night and analyze various symbols in relation to the subject in the following order.
A. Symbols in setting.
B. Symbols in action.
C. Symbols in words.
Long Day's Jouney into Night is a record of the conflict of the illusion o f happy past and the reality o f bitter present of Mr.and Mrs. Tyron-that of their family-symbolically that of the whole country of Western industrial society. In their feeling of spiritual homelessness, the Tyrones recognized that they share the common source of their tragedy. In fact, man has lost the self and his spiritual home in modern industrial society.
It can be said that O'Neill represent in this play the vision of human skinship which is the great legacy of his last plays. The characters reject the retreat from life.
This play seems to express primarily human islation, mostly through Mary, and to show the way how human being can recover his lost soul through mutural understanding and love.
