성령의 발출: 아우구스티누스와 프란시스 체이넬(Francis Cheynell)의 사상을 중심으로 = Procession of the Holy Spirit: Centered on the Thoughts of Augustinus and Francis Cheynell

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문의 목적은 성령의 발출과 관련하여 17세기 웨스트민스터 성직자들 중의 한 사람인 프란시스 체이넬의 신학에 나타난 동서방의 통일된 이해를 탐구하는 것이다. 성령의 발출은 동서방 교회의 분열 까지 초래할 정도로 교부들의 시대에는 대단히 첨예한 논쟁의 주제였 다. 이러한 기운은 지금까지 이어지고 있다. 이러한 동서방의 분열에 역사적인 아픔을 느끼고 동서방의 다른 입장들의 차이를 매우고 공통 적인 입장을 넓히려고 시도했던 많은 학자들이 있었다. 그들 중에 프란시스 체이넬도 성령의 발출에 대한 동서방의 관점들을 분석하고 조화하려 했던 학자였다. 특별한 점은 그가 자신의 관점을 아우구스티 누스의 사상에 의존하고 있다는 점이다. 이 교부는 성령의 발출에 있어서 이중적인 원리를 주장했다. 즉 성령은 아버지로부터 주로 나오 시나 아들로부터도 나오신다. 이러한 아우구스티누스의 발출론은 체이넬의 사상에서 동양의 견해, 즉 성령은 아버지로부터 아들을 통하여 나오신다는 입장과 조화를 이룬다. 물론 발출론에 있어서 체이넬이 삼위일체 교리에 대한 교부의 구조적인 이해를 충실히 따르지는 않았다는 점도 지적이 필요하다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

My aim in this paper is to examine, with regards to the procession of the Holy Spirit, the unified understanding of the Eastern and the Western churches on the issue as found in the theology of Francis Cheynell, one of the distinguished Westminster divines in the seventeenth century. The procession of the Holy Spirit has been such a serious issue of heated debate from the time of the Fathers to now as it has even led to the division of the church into the Western and the Eastern. There have been many theologians who sensed the historical pain caused by this division tried to fill the gap of the two different stances and broaden their common part. Francis Cheynell endeavored to analyze and harmonize the Western and the Eastern views of procession. Notably, he grounded his view on that of Augustine who argued the twofold principle of procession in which the Holy Spirit proceeds principally from the Father and also the Son.
This Augustinian view of procession is harmonized, in Cheynell’s thought, with the Eastern one, that is, the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father through the Son. It should be also noted that Cheynell was not fully faithful to Augustine’s structural understanding of the Trinity in his description of the procession issue
