On 11 September 1885, David Herbert Lawrence was born at Eastwood, Nottinghamshire. On 2 March 1930, he died at vence in the south of France, aged 44. Since then he has become a legend both as a writer and an artist. Everyone who has heard of Lawrence knows of his concern with sex. He was to be abused as indecent, or a pornographer, by some, and hailed as a liberator by others. Lawrence's preoccupation with sex had a personal origin. In Sons and Lovers he describes a family of boys so dominated by their mother's affection that when they grow up they cannot form satisfactory relationships with women. Lawrence himself had suffered that fate. Besides, in his last novel, Lady Chatterley's Lover, his "nice and tender phallic novel," Lawrence attempted to show how the sex relation can be "valid and precious" instead of being shameful. His purpose in writing was "to make an adjustment in consciousness to the basic physical realities." For the modern man and woman, he believed, the full, conscious realisation of sex was of the utmost importance, Lawrence, however, not only considers the sex experience as basic to initial health and happiness, but his religion and an important expression of in its search for vital mysteries. I know there are good reason for this theory and I've attempted to rethink Lawrence's sex problem.
