The term “Mei-Qiang-Can,” originating from a Chinese internet buzzword in 2019, refers to characters who are physically attractive, highly capable, yet marked by tragic destinies. Through its widespread use, the term has evolved from a descriptive label into a stable framework of character expectation, exhibiting distinct mythic qualities. Drawing on Roland Barthes’ theory of mythology, this study examines the process through which the “Mei-Qiang-Can” character is constructed as a mythic sign in Chinese television dramas, as well as the ideological logic underlying this process. Based on Barthes’ secondorder semiological system, three representative characters are selected as case studies: Zhen Huan in Empresses in the Palace, Wei Wuxian in The Untamed, and Xu Yan in Xu Wo Yao Yan. The analysis focuses on the formation of character signs within the television text, the transition from first-order signs to second-order mythic signs, and the ideological meanings embedded within the mythic layer. The findings indicate that, at the level of signification, these characters are constructed through visual representation, narrative events, and discursive expression as figures who undergo suffering and achieve transformation.
At the level of myth, the specific historical content embedded in these meanings is stripped away and rearticulated into the form of “Mei- Qiang-Can,” which is then combined with the implicit cultural notion that “suffering is a necessary precondition for the affirmation of value,” thereby producing mythic meaning. A demythologizing analysis reveals that the “Mei-Qiang-Can” narrative transforms structurally rooted forms of social oppression into necessary trials for individual growth.
In the process of circulation, this logic is naturalized, while the inherent irrationality of suffering itself is obscured.
