This paper aims to analyze the competition among imperialist powers surrounding the Russo-Japanese War (1904–1905) and the representations of Japan and Korea formed within that context, focusing on political cartoons. To this end, the “development and significance of the Russo-Japanese War” were first historically summarized, and the impact of the war on the Korean Peninsula was critically interpreted from the perspective of “imperialist gazes before and after the Russo-Japanese War and the representations of Korea,” based on political cartoons. The political cartoons were subdivided and researched through subtopics such as the great powers’ views on the Russo-Japanese War, the construction of the image of Korea represented within them, and the changed international status of Japan following the war.
The Russo-Japanese War was more than just a clash between Russia and Japan; it was a war that determined the fate of the Korean Peninsula. While the war was an imperialist conflict between Russia and Japan vying for interests in East Asia, the fundamental cause of the conflict lay in securing dominance over the Korean Peninsula.
Furthermore, the background of the war was intricately intertwined with the Emperor’s assessment of the situation, aimed at diluting the domestic situation in Russia where economic hardships and social discontent were escalating; Britain’s political stance in blocking Russia’s southward expansion policy; and the interests of Western powers, such as the United States and France, in their scramble for imperialist colonies. In this process, the Korean Empire had its declaration of neutrality denied, its policies to maintain independence through modernization were thwarted, and as a result of the peace treaty ending the war, it fell under the control of Japanese imperialism.
Editorial cartoons are not merely satirical drawings; they are an important medium that visually reproduces the international order and power relations of the time and conveys a political perspective to the public. Editorial cartoons published in Japanese and European journalism before and after the Russo-Japanese War visually represented the international political dynamics and imperialist discourse of Western powers. They served as key materials demonstrating the changes in Japan’s imperialist status during the course of the war and how Korea was marginalized and perceived as a target for colonization.
Cartoons satirizing the Russo-Japanese War reflected the perspectives and logic of imperialist powers and played a role in shaping and disseminating dominant discourses surrounding Joseon. Moving beyond existing research centered on war history, this study re-examines the significance of the Russo-Japanese War and the representation of Joseon through an analysis of political cartoons.
