Recently, with the development of transportation and communication added to historical background, registered foreigner population in Korea has rapidly increased and accordingly, Korea is entering a multi-cultural society. In line with this trend, studies on Korean citizen's recognition on multicultural society and multicultural families have actively conducted. Studies have also been conducted on various ways to lead multicultural society to positive directions. Numerous preceding studies have verified that multicultural education in early childhood has positive effect on the multicultural recognition and recognition on multicultural families and that these recognition in childhood are most greatly affected by their parents.
Nevertheless, there have been few studies on the recognition of parents with young children on multiple cultures and multicultural families. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to provide basic materials for multicultural education for parents by researching on the difference in recognition of Korean parents with young children on multicultural families based on the multicultural recognition.
A questionnaire survey was conducted on 243 parents with young children. Frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, t-test, F test, multivariate analysis and correlation analysis were conducted by using SPSS WIN program. This thesis was completed based on data analyzed to verify study hypotheses, and study questions were as follows;
First, is there difference between multicultural recognition (acceptability, sensitivity, openness) and recognition on multicultural families (recognition on parents, recognition on children, acknowledgement as Koreans) of Korean parents with young children based on socio-demographic variables?
Second, what differences are there in recognition on multicultural families of Korean parents with young children based on their level of multicultural recognition?
Third, what relationship is there between recognition on multicultural families of Korean parents with young children and their level of multicultural recognition?
The results of this study based on the study questions are as follows;
First, study researched on the difference between multicultural recognition (acceptability, sensitivity, openness) and recognition on multicultural families (recognition on parents, recognition on children, acknowledgement as Koreans) of Korean parents with young children based on socio-demographic variables. Parents with education of graduate school and over had higher acceptability among sub-factors of multicultural recognition than parents with high school education. In overall multicultural recognition, patents with two children had higher recognition than parents with three children. Patents with two children had higher overall recognition on multicultural families and its sub-factors, recognition on parents and recognition on children. Parents with first child who goes to primary, middle, high school and over had higher sensitivity in multicultural recognition. Parents with production and simple labor occupation had higher degree of multicultural openness. Although Korean parents with young children who had the experience of visiting multicultural families had higher level of acceptability and sensitivity and had higher multicultural recognition overall, experience of visiting multicultural families did not have effect on their recognition on multicultural families. Even though there was no difference between multicultural recognition and recognition on multicultural families based on the type of contact with multicultural families, there were differences in multicultural recognition, its sub-factors, recognition of multicultural families and its sub-factors among groups and families with direct overseas experience had higher recognition on them.
Second, this study analyzed differences in recognition on multicultural families of Korean parents with young children based on their level of multicultural recognition.
As the result of research on the difference in recognition on multicultural families by dividing the level of multicultural recognition into 3 groups of high, medium and low based on overall average, all 3 groups showed highest score in recognition on acknowledgement as Koreans followed by recognition on parents and recognition on children. In analysis on sub-factors of multicultural recognition by dividing 3 groups of high, medium and low based on average of acceptability, sensitivity and openness, scores of recognition were higher in the order of acknowledgement as Koreans, recognition on parents and recognition on children in sub-factors of recognition on multicultural families.
Third, study also investigated if there is relationship between recognition on multicultural families of Korean parents with young children and their level of multicultural recognition. All multicultural recognition and all recognition on multicultural families have effect on each other and the higher the level of multicultural recognition, the higher the recognition on multicultural families. Recognition on parents had the greatest effect on overall multicultural recognition and, in sub-factors, recognition on children had the greatest effect on acceptability and recognition on parents had the greatest effect on sensitivity while acknowledgement as Koreans had the greatest effect on openness. On the other hand, as for the effect of multicultural recognition on the recognition on multicultural families, sensitivity among sub-factors of multicultural recognition had the greatest effect on overall recognition on multicultural families and acknowledgement as Koreans. Both recognition on parents and recognition on children were most greatly affected by acceptability among sub-factors of multicultural recognition.
