Jeongjuga is a work of Gasa written by Lee, Hi-hyeon in the early part of 19th century in the Joseon Dynasty. It deals with Hong, Gyeong-rae's rebellion risen in 1811. This paper aims at investigating the structure and author's consciousness of Jeongjuga.
In Jeongjuga Hong, Gyeong-rae's rebellion is narrated from rising to being suppressed in order of time. But in this work the author did not pursue the detailed descriptions and organic relations of events and scenes. Instead of that the partial events and scenes are extended as occasion calls, and the related persons' attitudes or behaviors are represented critically.
In this way it is revealed that the government officials are to blame for Hong, Gyeong-rae's rebellion. Of course the author reproached the leaders of the rebellion and their troops. But immediately after the suppression of the rebellion the author manifested that not only the leaders of the rebellion but also the government officials were responsible for the pain and calamity of war, in spite of his social status belonging to the governing class. This author's consciousness provides Jeongjuga with the significance of literary history.
I anticipate that this study can contribute to ascertain the natures of Jeongjuga and the aspects of Gasa in 19th century of the Joseon Dynasty.
