This paper is a study of the time of making individual Buddhist sculptures of the late Joseon Dynasty enshrined in existing North Korean temples and the monk sculptors. During the Korean War, the indiscriminate bombing of the U.S. military strategic bomber B-29 destroyed Buddhist temples and Buddhist cultural assets located in cities and other remote areas. According to statistics from the Office of Academic Affairs of the Japanese Government-General of Korea in 1939, a total of 403 temples were found in North Korea, including 30 of Gyeonggi Province, 56 of Gangwon Province, 124 of Hwanghae Province, 87 of Pyongan Province, and 106 of Hamgyeong Province. However, most of the temples were destroyed during the Korean War, leaving only 14 percent, or 59 others. The existing temples such as Yonghwasa Temple in Pyongyang (1980 and 1984), Gwangbeopsa Temple in Pyongyang (1991), Yeongtongsa Temple in Gaepung in Hwangbuk (2005), and Singye Temple in Goseong, Gangwon Province (2007) were restored after the war. Currently, 192 Buddhist sculptures are enshrined among 27 temples. Among them, 72 Buddhist statues (excluding Na Han-sang of Seongbulsa Temple because of the large quantity) are enshrined in 13 places believed to have been produced in the late Joseon Period. Comparing these statues to the temple property register and the official gazette of the Japanese Government-General of Korea, most of the materials and specifications are different, because most of the statues have different materials and sizes, they are believed to have been relocated after the Korean War when the restoration of the temple. The Wooden Seated Buddha and Amitabha at Simwonsa Temple in Yeontan are believed to have been produced by sculptors of Hyeonjin genealogy in the first half of the 17th century, and the Wooden Seated Buddha and Bodhisattva in Gangseo-sa Temple in Baechon are believed to have been produced by sculptors of Yeongcheol genealogy in the mid-17th century. The Wooden Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva of Woljeongsa Temple in Anak are believed to have been produced by a sculptor of the Guemmun genealogy in the late 17th century. The Wooden Buddha Triad and four Bodhisattva of Daeungjeon Hall of Jangan Temple in Hoyang, and the Wooden seated Buddha of Yeongsanjeon Hall in Bohyeonsa Temple in Pyeongyang, and the Buddha statues enshrined in Bulyeongdae and Habiroam in Bohyeonsa Temple in Hyangsan are presumed to have been produced by Jinyeol genealogy in the early 18th century. It is estimated that the Wooden Seated Buddha in Donggeumgangam, Sunan in the late 18th century, was produced by a sculptor of Bonghyeon genealogy. Wooden Buddha Triad and four Bodhisattva in Daeungjeon Hall of Jangansa Temple in Hoyang are believed to have been built in 1702 when the Gwiok was reconstructed, and the Gwiok and Jinyeol later will participate in the Wooden Triad Buddha Statue in Sangunsa Temple in Goyang in 1713. Thus, it can be seen that sculptors belonging to the same genealogy as the monks who worked in the northern part of the country participated in the reconstruction of Buddhist temples in the North. In particular, Buddhist architecture, Buddhist sculptures, and Buddhist paintings produced during the late Joseon Dynasty were monks who were active in the central and southern regions. This can be inferred from the literature that monks who conducted the Buddhist temple in Yongjusa Temple in Hwaseong in 1790 were mainly Buddhist monks who were active in the southern part of the country. In the future, a systematic review of North Korea s individual temples and arrangement of Buddhist cultural assets will reveal the concrete substance of Buddhist art made by artists before the division of the two Korea.
