The Purpose of this study is to explore the structure (and), techniques and characteristics of the literary styles of E. Hemingway(1899-1961)'s "A Farewell to Arms"(1929) in order to understand the key elements of this novel and his philosophy more clearly.
The novel is a romantic tragedy. Planned almost like a play in five acts and it again shows Hemingway's obsession with violence, sex, and death. Here he shows increasing use of symbolism, -in the rain, the seasons and natural scenery.
In Chapter Ⅱ, the author examines the structures and techniques in relation to his styles in this novel. It seems that Hemingway's great achievement in his creative writings is his powerful, style-forming mastery of the art of modern narration which has created a now style in modern literature.
His style is as eloquent of his content as the content itself ; the style is a large part the content ; The mindlessness of the style is the result of a need to stop thinking and is the purest reflection of that need.
Symbolic effects in this novel are achieved through a subtle Process of reiterated suggestion. Among the many whith might be mentioned, we shall be concerned with only three ; the weather, the emblenatic people, and the landscapes.
No matter which style Hemingway was using, his dialogue generally remains constant giving as nearly as possible the illusion of real speech, after to the point of dullness. Heningway's styles and technicques at their best convey spiritual as well as material effects. In thes respect, his work is in the tradition of symbolic realism that includes M. Twain, H. James and W. Faulkner.
A Farewell to Arms, with its deserter-hero(F. Henry), is a study in disillusionment. Both Catherine and the child die, and the novel closes with one of hemingway's most bitter and nihilistic comments ; Henry likens Human life to that of ants caught in a fire and ignored by God.
The highest reach of Hemingway's understatement of emotion is that "After a while I went out and left the hospital and walked back to the hotel in the rain."
