장르 문학의 현실과 지평 = Truth and Prospect of Genre Literature

국문 초록 (Abstract)

현대 문학 이론에서 장르는 한 마디로 창작과 독서의 ‘관습’이라 할 수 있다. 장르는 작가와 독자가 공유하고 있는 일종의 규약이자 묵계인 것이다. 하지만 한국의 문학 현실에서 장르 문학이라는 개념은 편견과 억압에 시달려왔다. 장르 문학은 상업성에 사로잡힌 문학으로, 통속적이고 저급한 문학으로, 일부 계층이나 세대만을 겨냥한 문학으로 인식되어 왔다. 때로는 장르의 속성이 두드러졌다는 이유로 억압이나 검열의 대상이 되기도 했다.
장르 문학에 대한 편견을 바로 잡는 것은 장르에 대한 인식을 새롭게 함으로써 가능해질 수 있다. 장르는 독자의 독서 행위에 의해 발견되는 관습이자 규약이다. 장르 문학은 그러한 관습에 익숙한 마니아 집단에 의해 애호되는 유형의 주제와 형식을 갖춘 문학 작품들을 의미한다.
보편적인 독자 집단을 대상으로 획일적인 인쇄와 유통을 통해 소통되던 시대에 장르 문학은 상투적이고 통속적이며 소수에게만 어필하는 문학 작품일 뿐이었다. 하지만 디지털 환경에서 장르 문학은 다양한 매체를 활용하여 다양한 독자층에 어필할 수 있는 콘텐츠로 활용될 수 있을 것이다. 새로운 환경에 알맞은 전략과 상상력이 요구되는 시점이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The Genre can be called a ‘convention’ in creating and reading in modern literature theories. The Genre is a sort of a code or tacit agreement between writers and readers. However the concept of Genre Literature in Korea has been suppressed. Genre Literature has been called commercial, substandard and narrow literature. Sometimes they had suppressed and submitted for censorship for they had too much genre attributes.
It is possible to remedy those prejudices about Genre Literature by renovating our perception for Genre. The Genre is a convention or rule which the readers find by reading. The Genre Literature means texts that have themes and forms the aficionados love. The aficionados are familiar to those conventions.
The literature was communicated by uniform presswork and distribution in past. Genre literature was conventional, vulgar and narrow those days. However in digital environments, Genre literature can be utilized as widely appealing contents by using variety media. We need fresh strategies and imagination for new environment.
