서사적 위반과 경계 넘나들기(2) - 에.테.아. 호프만의 『브람빌라 공주』 연구 = Narrative Transgression and Boundary Crossing(2) - A Study on E. T. A. Hoffmann’s Prinzessin Brambilla

국문 초록 (Abstract)

서사적 메타렙세는 서사 층위 간의 경계를 무너뜨리며 의도적으로 서사 논리를 위반하며 텍스트의 인위성을 부각하는 메타픽션적인 서술 전략이다. 이는 현대적으로 개념화되기 이전에 이미 독일 낭만주의 문학에서는 즐겨 사용된 서술 방식으로서, 이 논문에서는 에.테.아. 호프만의 『브람빌라 공주』에 나타난 서사적 메타렙세의 문학적 형상화와 그 의미를 연구한다. 서사적 메타렙세는 수사적 메타렙세와 존재론적 메타렙세로 구분되며 호프만의 작품에는 두 가지 유형의 메타렙세가 모두 나타난다. 작품에 나타난 수사적 메타렙세는 서사와 서술의 동시성을 통해 서사 논리를 해체하고 서술 주체의 불확실성을 강조함으로써 텍스트의 인위적 속성과 허구성을 강조한다. 존재론적 메타렙세의 경우 상이한 서사 층위의 물리적 경계 붕괴를 통해 『브람빌라 공주』의 열린 해석과 낭만주의 시학의 이상을 구체적으로 보여준다. 마지막으로 이 작품에는 미장아빔을 통해서도 서사적 메타렙세의 효과가 간접적으로 시도된다. 독일 낭만주의 문학을 현대적 서사 개념을 통해 재조명하는 것은 과거와 현재의 연속성을 드러내고 낭만주의 문학의 잠재적 영향력을 현대 문학 및 이론적 담론 속에서 새롭게 평가하는 데 기여할 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Narrative metalepsis is a metafictional narrative strategy that collapses the boundaries between different narrative levels, deliberately violating narrative logic and emphasizing the artificiality of the text. Before being conceptualized in modern theory, this narrative technique had already been frequently employed in German Romantic literature. This paper examines the literary manifestation and significance of narrative metalepsis in E. T. A. Hoffmann’s Prinzessin Brambilla. Narrative metalepsis can be categorized into rhetorical and ontological metalepsis, both of which appear in Hoffmann’s work. Rhetorical metalepsis dismantles narrative logic and highlights the uncertainty of the narrative subject by creating simultaneity between narration and the narrated events, thereby reinforcing the artificial and fictional nature of the text. Ontological metalepsis, on the other hand, embodies the Romantic poetic ideal by physically collapsing the boundaries between different narrative levels, allowing for an open interpretation of the text. Finally, in this work, the effect of narrative metalepsis is also indirectly achieved through mise en abyme. Reinterpreting German Romantic literature through the lens of modern narrative concepts highlights the continuity between past and present and contributes to a renewed evaluation of Romantic literature’s latent influence on contemporary literary and theoretical discourse.
