세계 대학 순위평가(THEWUR)에서 평가준거별 점수가 총점에 미치는 영향력 분석 = The Analysis of the Impact of Criteria Scores on the Overall Score of the Times Higher Education's World University Rankings

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 The Times Higher Education의 세계대학순위평가의 2014년 결과에서 평가준거들이 순위에 어느 정도로 영향력을 행사하는지 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 세계대학평가에서 상위 200개 대학 중 188개 대학의 국가별 분포와 다섯 가지 평가 준거들의 평균과 표준편차를 구했고, 평가준거 간 상관관계와 평가준거와 총점의 상관관계를 분석했으며, 위계적 회귀분석으로 평가준거들이 총점을 어느 정도로 설명해주고 있는지 분석하였다.
연구 결과, 미국과 영국의 대학이 상위 188개 대학들 중 약 50%를 차지하며 인용 영역의 평균이 가장 높았고 지식이전수입의 표준편차가 가장 높은 것으로 나타났다. 상관관계와 회귀분석 결과에 약간의 차이가 있었지만 종합해보면 연구, 교육여건, 인용, 국제화, 지식이전수입 순으로 총점에 영향력을 발휘하는 것으로 나타났다.
연구 영역이 가장 영향력이 있으므로 대학이 세계대학순위평가에서 순위를 상승시키고자 한다면 연구에 투자를 해야 한다. 그러나 현재 평가준거들은 특정 대학들에게 유리하게 구성되어 있고 소비자가 관심을 갖고 있는 교육의 질과 관련된 정보를 제공해주지 못하고 있다. 따라서 평가준거들은 특정 대학에만 유리하지 않고 소비자가 원하는 정보를 제공해줄 수 있는 방향으로 재구성될 필요가 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this research is to analyze the impact of five criteria scores on the overall score of the Times Higher Education’s World University Rankings (THEWUR) in 2014. First, it was calculated the number of countries in the top 188 universities and the means and standard deviations of the overall score and the five criteria’s scores. Secondly, the correlations among the criteria and between the criterion and the overall score were analyzed. Third, the stepwise regression was used to compute the influence of the five criteria scores on the overall score.
As a result of the analyses, nearly 50% of the top 188 institutions were American and British. The mean score of Citation and the standard deviation of Industry Income were highest, respectively. Albeit some differences between the result of the correlation and stepwise regression, the order of the impact was Research, Teaching, Citation, International Outlook and Industry Income.
The university which wants to increase the ranking should improve Research which was the most influential criterion. The current methodology, however, was favorable to some universities and did not provide consumers with information related to the quality of teaching. Therefore, the criteria should be fair to all universities and deliver useful information to customers.
