The purpose of this paper was to examine the effect of literatherapy through Shin, Kyung-suk`s An Isolated Rooms. People with mental illness always realize the feelings of isolation and powerlessness like all characters in it. She showed her own efforts to overcome the issues of alienation in her work. The paper used the literatherapy as a concept of leisure. Also, it focused on the problem of depressive disorder through the approach of reading and writing of novel, and counselling therapy. Literatherapy was used as a way to provide an opportunity of turning point where depressed patients rediscover self-esteem and overcome their depressive disorder. To accomplish this purpose, the paper applied the process of overcoming isolation as following: First, self-identification, second, catharsis, third, the discover of self-identity, and fourth, self-examination. In conclusion, this interaction between curer and patient is expected to enhance positive self-awareness of depressed patients to reduce alienation, depression, and anxiety.
