This thesis is to investigate the possible use of traditional patterns of Korean costumes and porcelains for club activities and to provide an opportunity for middle school students to learn about Korean traditional patterns, to develop cognizance and to make use of them in our daily life. The purpose is to make the students become familiar with Korean traditional patterns and to present the possibility of applying them into real life by fabricating Korean paper art works based on the study of traditional patterns. Students will be able to achieve the goal through this Korean paper art club activity. An intensive survey was carried out to measure the students' understanding levels about the traditional patterns.
The analysis on the survey shows that the students think they need to understand and make practical use of the traditional patterns even though they've scarcely had the chance to come in contact and to appreciate them. It also turned out that they've rarely had the chance to study about the traditional patterns at school, and the efforts of both the students and the society are needed to make more use of these traditional patterns in the modern society. Plus the fact that a lot of students have intention to purchase the clothing and goods adapting the traditional patterns into their design, suggests that the possibility of making practical use of these traditional pattern designs in the production of goods is strong enough. The importance of the design is inferred from the fact that the students care greatly about the design and color when they purchase clothes and that they are very sensitive about fashion trends and the brand names. Especially, there were opinions that it would be better if the traditional patterns were transformed, adjusting to the modern trend, rather than keeping its traditional form. One of their favorite patterns was geometrical pattern, for it suits to the modern style. In regards to the research on the students' interest, the majority of the students were generally interested in the traditional patterns, while about 40 % of the students showed little interest. However, the response of 30 students from the club after they had manufactured Korean paper art works during the club activity classes, utilizing the Korean traditional patterns, shows that more than 90 % of the students said their understanding level of the traditional patterns increased. Moreover, more than 90 % of the students showed increased level of interest in the traditional patterns. The most fun part for the students was said to be the process of pasting the Korean paper and collecting patterns. 74 % of the students had positive view about the possibility of developing products utilizing the traditional patterns, while 20% had negative view.
The following is the result of teaching club activity using the traditional patterns of costume: First, the students' understanding and interest about the traditional patterns were increased and they learned different kinds of the traditional patterns and the usage. Second, the necessity of teaching traditional patterns at school was recognized and the possibility of utilizing the costume and goods was presented.
Throughout this research, the traditional patterns that had not been well acknowledged so far were newly recognized and the subject of applying the traditional patterns into merchandise was researched and the art works were produced within the middle school curriculum. Also, the possibility that the design pattern of traditional costume and goods could be adapted and manufactured in modern society was presented.
In conclusion, there's a great possibility of employing the traditional patterns as a subject material for club activities, classes for specialty and aptitude, and also for discretion activities.
