This study examines the poetic world of Byeon Yeong-gyu as presented in 󰡔Hyosan-jip󰡕, focusing on the interrelationship between form and thought. It aims to clarify how his poetry embodies the processes of moral cultivation and the establishment of a rectified mind (jeong-sim) through literary structure.
The analysis is centered on the distinction between serial poems and non-serial poems. Serial poems reveal the gradual process and accumulation of self- cultivation through repetition and variation, while non-serial poems condense moments of insight into a single image, presenting the state of inner clarity. In terms of natural imagery, mountains function as the space of practical cultivation, whereas water symbolizes the internal state of the mind through its properties of flow and reflection. Emotion, moreover, is transformed from mere expression into ethical reflection and existential awareness.
Importantly, Byeon’s literary theory in 「Munseol」 provides the philosophical foundation for this poetic structure. By defining literature as a vehicle of the Dao and emphasizing naturalness and ‘gi-gol’ (vital force and structural integrity), he establishes a unified aesthetic in which form, nature, and emotion are organically integrated.
In conclusion, Byeon Yeong-gyu’s poetry presents an integrated structure combining form, nature, emotion, and moral philosophy, exemplifying how practical Neo-Confucian thought of the late Joseon period is realized in literary form.
