Kugak 國樂 orchestra is a music attempted after the recognition of Western orchestra as ‘orchestra' in Korean traditional music. From the late 1960s to the 1970s, some scholars denied the value of a kugak orchestra. Some thought that the kugak orchestra was different from the Western, or it lacked qualification compare to the western. In such a situation, musicians who were urged to install the kugak orchestra in accordance with the westernized stage standards were forced to actively modernize in the form of performance and orchestration. And the imitation of the Western orchestra was tolerated to some extent under the name of modernization.
However, in the 1980s, after finding the stability as an independent genre of ‘Korean traditional orchestra,’ kugak orchestra actively seek and the direction of development. This was possible because of the accumulation of human resource, repertoire, and performance, which have been accumulated for nearly 20 years since the kugak orchestra was first tried in early 1960s. In addition to this, they held a concert to look at Korean music orchestra from a different point of view than western orchestra, using social interest that was concentrated in Korean traditional culture at that time.
The search for the development direction of Korean traditional orchestra became more active after the 1990s. Various attempts are being made at this time, such as the development of a repertoire that combines popular music such as Samul nori 사물놀이 and kugak popsong, and the dramatization of famous novels. And since the beginning of the 2000s, it has not only reflected the taste of the public, but also led to attempts to lead popular tastes with various traditional music.
In other words, kugak orchestra, which tried to match the social view comparable to the Western orchestra at the starting point of attempting orchestra as a Korean classical music, has come to the point where it creates a new music culture and lead the audience's taste through it. The age of kugak orchestra is not limited to responding sensitively to the situation of every era, but it can be said that it includes the anticipation of upcoming culture.
Moreover, it is also important to note that since the 1980s, various orchestras have been established, and these organizations have existed as a group of musicians releasing ‘Korean traditional music’ in modern society. For the future of the kugak orchestra, it is time to discuss the role and development direction of the kugak orchestra by separating the music genre of Korean traditional music and the music performing group.
