In order to see the trend of research on introducing modern kugak 國樂 the research first looked at the magazines during the Japanese colonial period. The Korean music scholarship was most done by non-musicologists, such as scholars in folklore or language, or by Japanese in the perspective of outsider. The earlier magazines were published for enlightening people, and later specialized research magazines were began to appear in each field, for example in the case of music, specialized magazine like Samgwang 『三光』. It was the time that non music specialist were researching kugak.
After the liberation many scholarships faced a new phase as building its academic ground as well as the system, although it was the time of historical turbulence. Many musical associations were organized; the Kungnip Kugagwon 國立國樂院 (National Kugak Center) was opened; Intangible Cultural Property system was set. Not only each organization but also the institutions published their own journals, such as government organ and Muhyong munhwajae 『無形文化財』(Intangible Cultural Property). With its quick development, a special magazine Kugakkye 『國樂界』(The Korean Traditional Music Field) was appeared suddenly. But up until 1970s there was no specialized kugak journals.
After the universities opened kugak departments new researchers were raised with the high level education. They did active academic works and the journals were published by the universities or their research center. Han'guk Kugak hakhoe 韓國 國樂學會 (Korean Musicological Society) first published Han'guk umak yon'gu 『韓國 音樂硏究』(Studies in Korean Music) and some other academic journals including Han'guk umak sahakpo 『韓國音樂史學報』(Journal of the Society for Korean Historico- Musicology) by Han'guk umak sahakhoe 韓國音樂史學會 (the Society for Korean Historico-Musicology) were appear as making the modern research environment.
