비트겐슈타인과 관상

국문 초록 (Abstract)

비트겐슈타인의 저작에는 ‘관상’이라는 수수께끼 같은 표현이 등장한다. 드물게 사용되었지만, ‘관상’이란 표현은 단순하게 비유인지 아니면 규칙 혹은 의미와 관련된 중요한 함축이 담겨있는지 불분명해 보인다. 이 글에서는 ‘관상’이라는 용어를 통해서 비트겐슈타인이 무엇을 의미했는지에 대한 해명을 시도한다. 그 과정에서 ‘관상’이라는 표현은 대체로 얼굴, 얼굴 표정 혹은 상(체)과 관련지어 나타난다는 점에 주목할 것이다. 그리하여 비트겐슈타인의 관상은 그가 중기 저작 이후에 빈번하게 논의한 상의 인지라는 문제의 특수한 사례에 해당하며, 이른바 그가 말한 얼굴 표정들의 게임이 관상 개념과 밀접하게 관계되어 있음을 보일 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The enigmatic word 'physiognomy' appears in Wittgenstein's writings. It is not clear whether the word shows another occasion of metaphor or the case of significant implication regarding rules or meaning. This essay explores what Wittgenstein means by 'physiognomy'. In the course of discussion, I will pay attention to its appearance with relevant context of where the expressions like 'face', 'facial expressions', or 'aspect' appear. I will show that 'physiognomy' is a special case of the problem of aspect recognition, and that the game of facial expression is closely related to Wittgenstein's use of the word 'physiognomy'.
