농촌 새마을운동의 재조명(再照明) = Reappraisal of Rural Saemaul Undong

Recently, the evaluation of Saemaul Undong(``New Community Movement``) in the 1970s has been devided into two contrary views. While some had the positive views by reason of the achievement and historical meaning of Saemaul Undong(SU), others had the negative views by reason of SU`s aspects of the compulsory mobilization movement under the Yusin(Revitalizing Reforms) system. The purpose of this study was to reappraise the backgrounds, motives, significances and limitations of SU for the purpose of SU`s just and proper evaluation and consummation of SU as a ``National Movement``. This study reappraised firstly not only a ruler`s subjective faith but also a political and economical background in those days in case of the backgrounds of SU, secondly spiritual and material aspects, spontaneity of the people and compulsion of the state power, leadership and membership in case of the motives of SU, lastly accomplishments, faults, significances and limits of SU.
