국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 진보주의 종교교육학자인 소피아 파스(Sophia L. Fahs)의 교육신학을 연구함으로써 현재 한국 기독교교육이 직면한 과제에 실마리를 찾고자 한다. 파스의 진보주의 교육신학은 진보주의 교육 사상과 자유주의신학에 뿌리를 두고 있으며 사회 복음 운동의 영향을 받아 형성되었다. 또한 20세기 초의 근대적 시대정신을 기반으로 과학적이고 진화론적 우주론과 대화를 시도하였고, 인간의 보편적인 종교성에 대한 인식을 기반으로 다양한 종교에 대한 관심을 기울였다. 파스의 교육신학의 핵심 주제를 중심으로 한국 기독교교육의 과제를 제시하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 아동의 창조적 질문을 격려하고 그들의 종교적 탐색과 경험의 과정을 풍부하게 하여 경험적 지혜를 형성하도록 해야 한다. 둘째, 과학적 지식과 종교적 신념이 서로 조화롭게 균형을 이룰 수 있도록 교육해야 한다. 셋째, 배타적이고 폐쇄적인 신앙을 극복하고 우주적이고 보편적인 하나님 이해를 형성하도록 해야 한다. 넷째, 성서비평학적 연구 결과를 적극적으로 수용하여 학습자의 종교적 사고 능력에 적합한 교육을 해야한다. 다섯째, 사회적 책임 의식을 고양시켜 하나님 나라의 실현에 참여하도록 교육해야 한다. 마지막으로, 다양한 종교와 문화에 대한 존중과 세계시민으로서의 열린 사고를 형성할 수 있도록 교육해야 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Sophia L. Fahs was one of the most prominent religious educators of the 20th century. However, she is little known to Korean Christian educators because her progressive and liberal approach to religious education strongly contrasted with that of evangelical education. Her educational theology was influenced by John Dewey's progressive philosophy, liberal theology and the Social Gospel movement. In addition, she paid attention to both modern science for indications of a new cosmology as well as great religious writings of diverse cultures. She dedicated her whole life to children's education and developed her educational theory through actively practicing in experimental Sunday Schools. This article studies her personal life and educational theology and articulates the important themes of her theory for present Christian education. Fahs's distinctive theology of religious education can give great insights to Korean Christian education, which has faced serious crises. First, Fahs encouraged the natural curiosity of children and empowered them to gain experiential wisdom through their own religious searching and experiences. Second, she educated children to make harmony between scientific knowledge and religious belief. Third, Fahs helped children overcome exclusive and self-centered faith in order to create a cosmological and universal understanding of God. Fourth, she accepted diverse interpretations of biblical criticism and taught biblical materials while modern scholarship into consideration. Fifth, Fahs emphasized the social responsibility of Christians and encouraged them to participate in social transformation. Last but not least, she educated children to respect other religions and cultures and hence grow into mature global citizens.
