분단을 넘는 역사학 : 강만길의 민족 통일전선 운동 연구 = Historiography Overcoming Division - Kang Man-gil's work on the National Unification Front movement

The task of Kang Man-gil’s historiography after Perception of History in the Age of Division(1978) was to establish a theory of overcoming division: first, to reveal that the national liberation movement during the colonial period was not only divided into left and right but was a process to form a unified front, and second, to describe the history of the national liberation movement as a movement to establish a unified national state, including the issue of nation-state construction after liberation.
Kang Man-gil published The Korean National Revolutionary Party and the Unified Front in 1991. It was the culmination of his research on the National Unification Front movement in the 1980s. The book characterized the KNRP as a “de facto left-right unified front” and a unified front party that was established in response to the Japanese imperialist anticipated invasion of mainland China, in line with the development of the global anti-fascist Popular Front.
Kang Man-gil’s study of the National Unification Front has been criticized as a naive unification front theory without a hegemonic perspective. In response Kang emphasized that nation was more important than class in the history of the Korean national liberation movement, and sought to reveal the “universality of world history and the specificity of East Asia” of the Unification Front in Korean history.
