This study analyzes the ‘Special Tea House’ system in Kinmen, Taiwan—a concentrated site of Cold War-era state violence and military control—through the lens of subaltern discourse. Under the 43-year martial law and wartime mobilization regime following 1949, the entire island of Kinmen was transformed into a massive military barrack, where the daily lives of residents were entirely subordinated to military logic under the absolute imperative of ‘national security.’ This mechanism of garrison-state control went beyond mere spatial reorganization, serving as a foundation to justify sexual dominance mediated by gender.
In particular, this research focuses on the fact that, unlike cases in South Korea or Japan, the Kinmen Special Tea House was operated as a public and legalized institution by the state. By critically illuminating the void and silence of female subaltern subjects obscured by grand narratives, this study aims to clarify the socio-cultural implications of the ‘subaltern trauma’ and the ‘spatial traces’ of the women known as shiyingsheng (侍應生). Through this process, the study reveals the hidden dimensions of Cold War militarization—previously addressed only limitedly in academia—and restores the historical layers of ‘gendered violence’ structured by state power.
