This study aims to explore the perception of wealth and the underlying normative characteristics of Eastern Han intellectuals by analyzing the semantic network of economic vocabulary in Xu Shen(許愼)’s Shuowenjiezi(說文解字). To this end, the relationships between headwords and definitions for vocabulary under the Bei(貝, shell/wealth) and Shi(食, food) radicals were converted into data, and Xu Shen’s cognitive structure was objectively visualized using Social Network Analysis (SNA). The analysis revealed a dual structure in the Bei radical section, which recognizes the fluidity(Hua, 化) of wealth while attempting to subsume it under the values of the household(Mian, 宀) and morality(Xian, 賢). In the Shi radical section, a mechanism was observed that attempts to sublimate the instinct of ingestion into communal propriety through ritual(Xiang, 饗) and hierarchy(Yang, 養). This intellectual project by Xu Shen represents a third way sought at the semantic level and a practice of the Rectification of Names(正名), attempting to sublimate desires into an internal rule of ritual(禮治) through the redefinition of concepts. This approach stands between the affirmation of realistic desires by Sima Qian(司馬遷) in the Shiji(史記) and the institutional control attempted by Ban Gu(班固) in the Hanshu(漢書). This study presents a methodology for convergence research that moves beyond data development to data utilization by integrating data science with traditional philology. It holds academic significance in demonstrating, through the methodology of Data Hermeneutics, the function of value establishment that the humanities must perform in an AI era overflowing with signifiers. Ultimately, this paper suggests that research on classics can expand into Data Hermeneutics, proposing future values beyond merely restoring the past through the intersection with digital technology.
