This study, grounded in Talmy’s (2000) Window of Attention theory, explores the cognitive-semantic mechanisms underlying the “V + qǐlái” structure in modern Chinese. The research demonstrates that qǐlái, originally functioning as a directional complement indicating upward motion, has evolved into a multifunctional grammatical marker that encodes cognitive emergence, subjective evaluation, and experiential initiation. By examining five dimensions—action onset, path orientation, state emergence, subjective judgment, and experiential focus—this paper systematically analyzes how qǐlái triggers attentional windowing across different semantic types. Findings reveal that the “V + qǐlái” structure commonly constructs a cognitive path that spans from perceptual input to mental processing and evaluative judgment, thereby enabling explicit encoding of the event’s initiation point. This mechanism reflects not only the abstraction and grammaticalization of directional complements, but also the growing cognitive orientation of modern Chinese in expressing subjective experience. The analysis contributes to a deeper understanding of the semantic functions of qǐlái-related structures and provides both theoretical and empirical support for the interdisciplinary study of Chinese directional systems and cognitive linguistics.
