Sim Su-Gyeong is from Hungu(勳舊: Meritorious Subjects) family whose ancestors were vassals of merit. His grandfather Sim Jung(沈貞) started the Gimyo Sahwa(己卯士禍: Literati purge) and later died from drinking poison ordered by the King. The older brother of his father also died from the interrogation and his father was killed by Yeojin tribe. The family of Sim Su-Gyeong collapsed like that. Sim Su-Gyeong has actually passed the state examination as the first place. However, the government at that time, which was dominated by the Sarim(士林) scholars, didn"t like Sim Su-Gyeong because his grandfather killed many people. During the reign of King Myeongjong, Sim Su-Gyeong worked as an official who emphasized academic intelligence and living under the principles He was appointed several times on significant positions, becoming an dangsanggwan(堂上官) official. During the reign of King Seonjo, he became one of the jaesang(宰相 councilor),uuijeong(右議政 supreme councillor) Even during the confrontation among the bungdang(朋黨 political factionalism) in the reign of King Seonjo, he continued his work as an official maintaining his political principles. In time of Imjin War(Japanese invasion), he participated in the battle as a general of the army raised in the cause of justice. He was 77 years old then. Looking at the activity of Sim Su-Gyeong, the bureaucracy of Joseon dynasty can be understood. His diverse experiences as an official inform us of the process of a person being hired and being promoted, while fulfilling his duty as an official. At the same time, he shows us the significance of having one`s own political principles during the time of changes. Eventually, Sim Su-Gyeong overcame the wrongdoing of his grandfather Sim Jeong through showing activities of an exemplary official. Such evaluation of Sim Su-Gyeong was actually given by the Sarim who are the victims of Sim Jeong`s deeds.
