This study is aim to make middle school students have cultural knowledge with fabric product design programs which are useful for living culture.
Artistic activities in modern life are important because of various desires of customers in contemporary society. In these days, the ability of understanding art and expressing one’s emotion through art is needed. Therefore, the fabric product design classes good for living culture are proper courses for students in modern society.
In the second part of this study, there are the meaning of living culture and the necessity of fabric product design educational programs. To understand the present condition of art education helpful for living culture, this study analyzed revised middle school art textbooks in 2015 and the survey of students and art teachers. The survey showed that the students and teachers need the art design educational programs which are useful for living culture, and the art classes can have positive effects for students.
In the third part, this study showed the results of the three different fabric product design classes after having real practical classes with middle school students. The three design classes are an accessory design class which is useful for clothing culture, a kitchen interior design class which is useful for dietary culture, and a tapestry fabric product design class which is useful for housing culture. Each class had a chance to learn the expression methods such as finger knitting, coiling, and tapestry. During the classes, to encourage the participation, the work sheet was distributed, and the teacher gave feedback for each student.
In the forth part, this study analyzed the result of the classes and the after class survey. This study showed the educational effects after the classes.
The first effect is the students can have new cognizance about the fabric product design educational programs. The learners realized that the design classes useful for living culture are necessary through the practical classes.
The second effect is the fabric products were used more in real life. The number of students who used self-created fabric products increased.
The third effect is the ability for design expression of students has been developed. The students studied the expression methods such as finger knitting, coiling, and tapestry, and they can make what they need.
For advanced the fabric product design educational programs, this study suggested developing teaching materials and class room interior projects.
Based on the study results, the fabric product design educational programs useful for living culture are necessary in the modern society. The researcher of this study tried to enhance the ability for expression of students and the interest of the fabric product designs. The researcher hopes that the educational programs in this study are frequently used in real classrooms to make art education better and the fabric product design programs which is interesting and artistic valuable are developed.
