제주동자석(濟州童子石)의 머리모양 연구 = A Study of Jeju Dongjaseok hairstyles

Jejudongjaseok is a personlike sculpture with about 30~100cm height a pair of which usually stand by a grave. Mostly made from basalt and limestone, the boy-shaped statue, established to console the dead s soul, has various kinds of figurative beauty. As nowadays this stone has become a unique monument, indicating Jeju s traditional sentiments and another representative image of Jeju, people are getting more interested in it. This study is to seek the effects of Josun Dynasty s people s hair styles, reflecting the times beauty senses, on Jejudongjaseok s. To decorate hair is a person s basic beauty instinct, based on social and cultural environments of the age. Moreover, hair styles characterize people, religions, sexes, ages, professions, and status, and suggest important materials to interpret the values of the era as some symbols. For the purpose, I referred to many historical documents and materials of Jeju s and Josun s. I analyzed Jejudongjaseok s and Josun s hair styles respectively, looked into similarities between the two, and tried to find the effects of Chosun s on Jejudongjaseok s. The results of the study show that Jejudongjaseok s hair styles are similar as Chosun s hair styles, such as Ssangsangtu, Jokjinhear, and pigtailed ribbon hear, which means Josun Dynasty had an effect on Jejudongjaseok s. In addition, each of its hair styles have changed and developed into unique forms in tune with social, political, cultural, and religious changes, influencing the forms of Jejudongjaseok.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

제주동자석(濟州童子石)은 무덤가에 한 쌍으로 세워지는 약 30~100cm 크기의 사람 형태를 지닌 조형물이다. 일반적으로 현무암과 석회암으로 되어 있으며, 망자의 넋을 위로하는 아이 형상의 석상으로서 다양한 형태의 조형미를 지니고 있다. 투박하고 서민적인 간 결한 표현방식으로 제주 고유의 정서를 담아내는 독특한 기념물이자 제주를 대표하는 또 하나의 이미지로서 자리매김하고 있는 제주동자석에 대한 관심이 늘어나고 있다. 머리를 장식하는 것은 미에 대한 기본적인 욕구 중 하나로 남녀노소, 신분고하를 막론 하고 인간이 갖는 가장 기본적인 것이라 할 수 있다. 더욱이 머리모양은 인종, 풍토, 그 시대의 미의식을 반영할 뿐만 아니라 민족, 종교, 정치, 성별, 연령, 직업과 신분 등을 나타내며 그 시대의 사회가 추구했던 모든 가치관을 읽어 볼 수 있는 중요한 요소로서 여러 가지 상징성을 가지고 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 조선시대의 시대적, 사회적, 문화적 환경을 토대로 그 시대의 미 의식을 반영하고 있는 머리모양이 제주동자석(濟州童子石)의 머리모양에 미치는 영향을 알아보고자 조선시대의 머리모양을 문헌 등을 통해 고찰하였다. 또한 제주동자석(濟州童 子石)의 머리모양을 자료와 문헌들을 통해 분석하였고, 제주동자석(濟州童子石)과 조선시대 머리모양을 분석하여 공통점을 찾고 조선시대 머리모양이 제주동자석(濟州童子石)의 머리모양에 미치는 영향을 알아보았다. 연구결과 제주동자석의 머리모양과 조선시대의 머리모양인 쌍상투, 쪽진 머리, 댕기머리가 공통적으로 나타났고, 조선시대의 머리모양이 제주동자석의 머리 모양에 영향을 미 쳤음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 사회적, 정치적, 문화적, 종교적인 환경의 변화에 따라 머리 모양은 각기 독특한 유형으로 변화•발전되어 왔으며, 제주동자석이라는 조형물에도 그대로 반영되었음을 알 수 있었다.
