The goal of this study is to research how to utilize nonverbal communication and what it means. Nonverbal behavior like tone or volume of voice, actions, touching are ways of communication which can complement or substitute for verbal language. Successful human relationships hinge on the ability to express oneself nonverbally and to understand the nonverbal communication of others.
The subjects of this study are limited to facial expressions, eye contact, hand gestures and touching.
The reasons why nonverbal behavior is important in communication are as follows.
1. Nonverbal behavior may form a universal language system.
2. Nonverbal behavior reflects one's social and cultural background.
3. Nonverbal behavior creates an expectation of the verbal message.
4. Nonverbal behavior is unconscious and instinctive, so people are apt to put more faith in it than utterances.
5. Nonverbal behavior can express feelings and emotions that can't be expressed through verbal language.
6. Because nonverbal behavior is visual, its expressive capability is strong.
